Choosing Your Provider & Birth Location
Schedule Your Prenatal Appointment Today!
Now is the perfect time to schedule your first prenatal appointment and find out where you’ll deliver your baby!
Step 1: Choose Your Provider
Not sure who will support you during pregnancy and birth? Start here!
OB/GYNs
- Medical doctors with 4 years of specialized training in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care.
- Can care for both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies.
- Perform C-sections when needed.
Midwives
- Experts in natural, physiological birth.
- Focus on low-risk pregnancies but can refer you for additional care if needed.
Types of Midwives:
- Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs): Registered nurses with midwifery training. Licensed in all 50 states. Work in hospitals and birth centers.
- Certified Midwives (CMs): Midwifery-trained but not nurses. Licensed in 9 states.
- Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs): Hands-on training with midwives. Licensed in 26 states, but may be restricted in others. Check your state laws if considering a CPM!
Step 2: Learn Where They Deliver
Providers typically deliver at specific hospitals. Find out which hospital your provider uses and research its labor and birth options.
Planning a Community Birth?
If you’re considering a home birth or birth center, ask your midwife about:
- Their preferred transfer hospital in case of an emergency.
- Whether you can set up concurrent care at that hospital just in case.
Taking these steps now will help you feel prepared and confident as you plan for your baby’s arrival!
